I was born in Tangalle and lived there until I got a job. My mother told me that I was a talkative boy. I always tried to imitate the way politicians spoke. I used to play at the small lake which was just in front of our home. One day my elder Brother noticed that I had a hidden talent for swimming. He introduced me to the swimming coach at Tangalle Life Saving Club. I rapidly improved my swimming skills under his supervision. After five months I was selected to represent the Hambantota District at the National Swimming Championship. It was my first national competition and I won third place in the butterfly stroke event.

As a school boy I had a fascination for electronics. It led me to design various circuits. My first attempt was a knight rider light system. I also began repairing TV and radio antennas.
I finished my schooling in 1990 and began working in Colombo as an antenna technician in 1991. That experience taught me many important life lessons, particularly about facing obstacles and developing problem solving abilities.

My first English teacher was my sister. She got me to develop my English skills using day to day activities. With her help I began reading English newspapers regularly as well as listening to the English news on radio and television. She advised me to write down new words I picked up after listening to the news. I believe this exercise improved my English knowledge considerably. Yet today I notice that students do not follow such methods to improve their English.

How I became a Teacher.

My sister informed me that sports teachers are to be recruited for Government schools.  With her encouragement I submitted my application. I was accepted and appointed to a rural school in Walasmulla on the 11th of November 1992. I worked in five schools until I joined the training college in Balapitiya. When I finished my training I was sent to a school in Beliatta. I never thought that this school will change my life as it has now.

The first day of touching a computer.

In mid 2003, a computer was donated to our library. But it was set up in the staff room. I did not pay any attention to it because I was not interested in computers at the time. After few days  - nobody had even switched it on. So one day I decided to use it.
I took a book from the library on how to operate a computer and spent a week reading through it. Then I tried to use MS Word to print a document. I failed! But a director from the Education office came to school and noticed my efforts and helped me.
In November 2004, my school was given a computer room for the benefit of our students. Our principal asked me to take charge of our new computer unit.

Until then, using a computer with internet access had been a dream for me and my students. We felt very lucky to get a computer unit in a rural area such as Nihiluwa in the Hambantota District. It was a dream come true.
It fulfilled a longstanding need at the Nihiluwa Public School. I personally believe that students must behave in the computer unit as if it was a library.

Since then I started duty as a center manager. Infact I had an idea to generate opportunities for my students to get maximum usage of this unit. With the help of my Principal and the staff I arranged a flexible time table in order to enable every class to access the computer unit.
The second phase ,I paid my attention towards the school leavers and allocate extra time to train them to meet the demand for ICT skilled personnel cater to the needs of the current job market.
To meet those things I started Ruhunu Lanka ICT Foundation in mid 2007.
